  • Overview

    The Coding Manager is responsible for the day to day direct management and oversight of all Coding Operations for each Customer site assigned.  In this role, the Coding Manager is accountable for the Customer’s satisfaction, the attraction and retention of coders and auditors, and the technical expertise supporting quality and timely work product.   The Coding Manager will be a leader of his/her employees, a coding Subject Matter Expert (SME) resource, and an ambassador of Peak’s Core Values. Coding managers are responsible for onboarding, nurturing, technically supporting and retaining all coders and auditors within their vertical. The Coding Manager will ensure all Customer and Employee issues are addressed in a timely and constructive manner. 


    Job Tasks: 

    • Takes primary responsibility for all daily operations at Customer site
    • Communicates escalations as needed to Director of Coding Operations
    • Provides a focused, warm and organized onboarding experience for new employees as they transition from the recruiting process to Operations
    • Provides employees with timely communication in response to Customer related issues as well as any internal Peak related questions to ensure a successful Peak experience
    • Monitors workflow, productivity and quality at all Customer sites
    • Monitors, assesses and assigns workload for all employees
    • Monitors employee performance against established performance metrics
    • Conducts performance reviews, at a minimum, annually and interim as appropriate or performance required.
    • Identifies coder educational needs through continuous accuracy rate monitoring
    • Monitors and recommends staffing levels based on volumes and project goals
    • Proactively coordinates with each Customer site to ensure timely and appropriate staffing including backfill, vacations, ramp, and  support for each work type
    • Develops and maintains supportive and positive relationships with all employees
    • Serves as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all coding related questions (internal & external)
    • Monitors and enforces compliance and quality program


    Minimum Education/Certifications: 

    ·        Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certified, OR,

    ·        Bachelor's degree in either Health Information Management or Healthcare Administration PLUS a current coding credential from either the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

    ·        2+ years of coding management experience with DoD medical coding, specifically for the Outpatient Medical Coding areas

    ·        Extensive knowledge for understanding and applying both civilian and MHS official coding clinic/guidelines.

    ·        Knowledge of medical terminology and usage, including general medical, surgical, pharmaceutical, hospital terms and abbreviations and abstracting techniques.

    ·        Knowledge of broad range of references such as the ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, medical dictionaries, and manual related to coding textbooks and glossaries.

    ·        Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements of medical records.

    ·        Knowledge of medical records procedures, maintenance and documentation, regulations, and principles to carry out a variety of medical records functions such as retrieval of information, analysis, coding, ensuring compliance, and compiling data.

    ·        Knowledge of laws and regulations on the confidentiality of medical records.

    ·        Knowledge of medical records procedures, regulations and principles to carry out a variety of medical records functions such as analysis, coding, ensuring compliance, and compiling data.

    ·        Knowledge and skill in data collection methods for basic health care, research information and statistical reporting.

    ·        Knowledge of laws and regulations on the confidentiality of medical records.

    ·        Skill in effective oral and written communication.

    ·        Strong written and verbal communication skills in order to facilitate continuous guidance and feedback to coders, auditors, colleagues and management as well as at Customer  sites

    ·        Excellent organizational and computer technical skills

    ·        Experience with remote coding and associated software applications

    ·        Experience with various Encoder, CAC and EHR software applications

    ·        Proficiency with MS Word, Excel and Power Point

    ·        Ability to use coding references such as (Coding Clinic, CPT assistant, etc.)

    ·        Understanding of physician query processes

    ·        Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines

    ·        Ability to lead, manage and retain a minimum of 35+ direct reports

    ·        Ability to manage a minimum of 5 Customer sites and projects associated with each

    ·        Ability to handle conflict and offer actionable resolution

    ·        Ability to travel


    Preferred Education/Certifications:

    ·        5+ years of Coding Management experience, preferably managing a remote staff

    ·        5+ years coding and/or auditing experience

    ·        Bachelor’s Degree

    ·        Basic understanding of  healthcare billing / accounting systems

    ·        Basic understanding of healthcare revenue cycle


    • Work performed primarily in a home office environment, consisting of light to moderate physical activity, including use of computer, telephone and/or other office equipment.
    • Work remote within the expected work hours and schedule including required meetings and on-time attendance.
